Crafting Magic Weapons with Elemental Gems

Precious stones make excellent catalysts for containing elemental magic. If you have a well-crafted weapon, an elementally-infused gem and some enchanter's oil, you have everything you need to craft a magical weapon. If you have a fine gem without any magical infusion, not to worry! A gem can be infused with elemental power by one of the following methods:

  1. Consuming a use of a scroll or potion related to desired element
  2. A total of 5 spell slots, either from 5 1st level spells, 1 5th level spell, a 2nd level spell and a 3rd level spell, or any similar combination.
  3. Immersion in the desired element, such as burying it the coals of a roaring fire or submerging it in strong acid, for at least an hour.

Once you have all your components, simply affix the gem onto the weapon in an appropriate way and apply the enchanter's oil to the weapon. While undergoing this process focus on visualizing the type of effect you'd like this weapon to take on. Magic is always a soft science, and the exact result of this procedure is somewhat uncertain.

Some weapons created this way do only damage associated with their magical infusion. Others may deal magical elemental damage in addition to weapon damage. Some have other strange effects, such as branding the target, slowing them, making damage harder to heal, and other such ailments. Keep your mind open when creating magical items.
